Sustainable Development Project of Lake Titicaca is a regional development initiative based on a comprehensive model. Its aim is to contribute to local sustainable development on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca watershed, this includes the provision of local activities that support tourism development and protection of cultural heritage in the Aymara communities that surround it. As part of this goal will also consider the improvement of basic water and sewage as well as the construction or improvement of systems of solid waste or garbage in the main towns that are located in your environment.
The project involves four components: 1) Implementation of actions for sustainable tourism development, particularly community-based, 2) Protection of cultural heritage (archaeological, historical and contemporary), 3) Development of basic sanitation infrastructure and management solid waste in major urban centers installed at the edge of Lake Titicaca, and 4) institutional strengthening of the management entities of national, regional and local tourism and cultural heritage.
The project had about 20 million U.S. dollars of funding, achieved as a World Bank loan in 2007, half a million of whom were directly involved to task of protecting cultural heritage, mainly archaeological (management plans for major joint or archaeological sites, recording and inventory, deployment legal and physical protection, conservation and restoration, in addition to building infrastructure for research and management).
